What is mucociliary movement?

| MUCOCILIARY MOVEMENT |
| The relationship between the nasal chamber and the para-nasal sinuses is like the a river (nose) and surrounding lakes (sinuses). The water in the lakes will flow into the river via a narrow but auto-controlled channel (ostium of the sinus), which can prevent the return of nasal secretions into the sinuses. But if the stubborn fluid from the nasal chamber gets forced into the sinus by forceful nose-blowing and cannot flow out (sinus ostium too narrow, channel damaged or walls swollen), then sinus inflammation with secondary bacteria infection occurs. |

There is an amazing fluid transport system in the human respiratory tract-an antigravity fluid transport system. It is mucociliary movement, which plays the cornerstone role in the nasal/sinus self-protective mechanism.
